Black eyed beans rasam / Lobia rasam

This rasam actually, is prepared with drained liquid from boiled black eyed / lobia beans.Boiled beans are prepared as sundal or guggillu ( in Telugu ).You can check my recipe list for Lobia guggillu. This rasam is very delicious and healthy.You can serve it as soup also.
Ingredients:
While boiling black eyed beans for sundal ( i used cooker ) add a little more extra water along with salt. Preserve this drained liquid for preparing this yummy rasam.It looks turbid and little thick.
Drained liquid – 50 to 60 ml.Make it double by adding water.
Salt,
Onion – 1 small, sliced fine,
Green chilli – 1, chopped fine,
Red chilli – 1,broken into pieces,
Peeled garlic cloves – 2, crushed,
Tamarind paste – 1 Tsp,
Jaggery powder – 1/2 Tsp
Hing – 2 pinch,
Haldi – 1/8 Tsp,
Tomato puree – 1 Tablesp, ( or a small tomato sliced fine ),
Oil/ ghee – 2 Tsp,
Mustard seeds – 1/4 Tsp,
Curry leaves – a sprig,
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 Tablesp,
Method:
1).Heat oil, add mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves, crushed garlic and red chilli. Fry till mustard krackles, add green chilli, onion, rasam powder and fry for few seconds.
2).Add tomato puree ( or pieces ) and cook for few seconds. Add dal liquid along with haldi, jaggery and tamarind paste.
3).Allow the rasam to boil for a minute.Sprinkle chopped coriander and remove.
4).You can serve it with hot plain rice and papads/ soup.
Tip:
a).Use ghee for tadka for that nice aroma.
b).Simple rasam powder – Dry fry 1 tsp dhania seeds, 6no.black pepper, 1/4 tsp jeera ,2 redchilli and make course powder.
c).I prepared sundal with lobia beans from fresh pods and used the drained liquid for rasam. If you are using dry beans,soak them for 6 hrs or over night and proceed. Add extra water as per your preference.
