Cholar dal is a very popular side dish in Bengali cuisine. It is easy to prepare and no elaborate preparation is needed for this.This dish is very tasty and protien rich and goes very well with chapathi / poori / rice preparations also.
Ingredients:
Split Channa dal – 125 Gms,( washed, soaked for 30 minutes ),
Potato – 2, medium, washed, peeled and cut into 1″ cubes, ( or boiled , peeled and cut into cubes.)
Haldi – 1/8Tsp,
Red chilli powder – 1/2 Tsp,
Cloves – 2,. Cinnamon – Two 1/4″ pieces, Cardamom – 1,
Bay leaf – 1,
Desiccated coconut powder – 2 Tablesp,
Salt,
Sugar – 1/2 Tsp,
Oil – 2 Tablesp,
Ghee 1 Tablesp,
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 Tablesp,
Method:
1).Fry the potato pieces in a tablesp of oil till light brown in colour with a pinch of salt . Keep them aside.
2).Boil Channa dal with just enough water till tender but not mushy .Keep it aside.
3).Heat oil and ghee in a thick bottomed kadai . Add cloves, cinnamon, cardamom , jeera, bay leaf and fry for few seconds.
4).Add Channa dal,chilli powder, coconut powder, sugar and haldi along with 250 ml water.Cook under low flame till gravy becomes thick . Sprinkle chopped coriander and remove.
Tip:
You can add any vegetable like cauliflower / beans / carrot etc.
