Healthy , tasty and protein rich Vaal dal masala curry

Vaal beans /pods or anapakayalu ( in Telugu ) are actually not directly used in curries like other beans . The inner beans are collected and used in different varieties of curries. The outer skin is discarded. Some use the tender beans directly in curries .If the beans are bigger they are soaked in water for few hours and the inner dal is pressed out.This dal is called pithiki pappu ( in Telugu ) and used in preparing curries like kurma and other masala preparations. We can prepare sundal / snacks also. I have already posted many interesting recipes of vaal dal.You can check and try. The difficulty is vaal dal is not available in all places. They are plenty available in Rayalaseema areas in Andhra and also in Karnataka region. Here iam giving a delicious masala curry in cooker.This can be served with break fast preparations like chapathi/ poori/ dosa and plain rice/ ragi sangati etc.
Ingredients:
Vaal dal – 250 Gms (pressed out dal from beans ),
Onion – 2 medium, sliced fine,
Green chilli – 2 slit lengthwise,
Red chilli powder – 3/4 Tsp,
Haldi – 1/8 Tsp,
Salt,
Dhania powder – 1 Tablesp,
Jeera powder – 1/4 Tsp,
Ginger garlic paste – 1 Tsp,
Curry leaves – few,
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 Tablesp,
Tomato – 1 Medium,chopped roughly,
Paste of 1tsp poppy seeds and 1 tablesp.fresh or desiccated coconut,
Oil – 3 Tablesp,
Cloves – 2, cinnamon – small bits 2, bayleaf – 1,
Method:
1).Heat oil in cooker add cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf, curry leaves , fry for a second and add onion along with chilli. Fry till onion becomes soft,add tomato ,fry till mushy and add ginger garlic paste. Fry till raw smell goes, add haldi, chilli powder, dhania powder, jeera powder and cook for 30 seconds.
2).Add dal along with salt , mix well,cook for a minute and add 400 ml of water.
3).Close the cooker and pressure cook for 3 Whistles. Once cooker cools down open the lid and add the paste of poppy seeds coconut mix (If necessary mix a Tablesp of water to the paste and add ) . Stir gently and cook for a minute.
4).Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Tip:
a). If gravy is very thick you can add little hot water.
