There are many varieties of masala recipes with vaal dal beens / ( Telugu ) anapaginjala pappu kurma. I included some of the interesting recipes in my recipe list.You can check and go through them if you are interested. Basically vaal beans are protein rich and recipes with it are very healthy and tasty.These beans are very popular and available in plenty in Rayalaseenma region.Some recipes are prepared with beans, some with the dal pressed out from the soaked beans. The pressed out dal is called pithiki pappu in Telugu. Even a crispy snack is prepared with the dal,fried in oil ( like channa dal ) and mixed in poha / murmur mixtures.
Ingredients:
Vaal dal – 250 Gms,
Onion – 2,medium, sliced fine,
Fresh coconut grated – 3 Tablesp,
Green chilli – 6, each slit into two,
Cinnamon – 1/2 inch pieces – 1+1,
Cloves – 2+2,
Cardamom – 1,
Bay leaf – 1,
Cashew nuts – 6 to 7,
Sounf – 1 pinch,
Salt,
Oil – 2 Tablesp,
Khus khus – 1/2 Tsp,
Curry leaves – few,
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 Tablesp.
Method:
1).Heat a tsp of oil, fry 4 chillies, 2 cloves, 1 piece of cinnamon, khus khus, cashew and sounf. Cool and grind it into a fine powder.Add grated coconut along with little water. Blend it again to make it into a fine paste.Keep it aside.
2).Heat the remaining oil in a pressure cooker, add bay leaf, cardamom, remaining cloves, cinnamon and curry leaves.Fry for few seconds, add onion and fry till it turns pink.
3).Add vaal dal, 2 sliced green chilli, 200 ml water and salt. Close the cooker and pressure cook for two whistles. When the steam escapes, remove the lid and add the ground paste along with 150 ml water.Stir gently and allow to cook dal in the masala gravy for 2 to 3 minutes under low flame with lid. Do not allow the dal to become mushy.
4).Add little more water if the gravy is very thick. Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves.
5).Serve this delicious dal recipe with rotis/ dosa/ poori/ masala rice preparations.This recipe is from Tamilnadu. I made little changes.
Tip:
If you prefer to cook dal with out using cooker you can proceed as usual in normal way.This is a best side dish for diabetics.
