This delicious dal preparation is very tasty and protein rich side dish.
Ingredients:
Palak/ spinach – 50 Gms, pick, wash and chop the leaves and tender stems, keep it aside,
Toor dal – 175 Gms,
Moong dal – 2 Tablesp,( optional),
Salt,
Oil – 2 Tablespoons,
Tomato – 2, medium, roughly cut into pieces,
Green chilli – 4, slit length wise,
Red chilli powder – 1/2 Tsp,
Haldi – 1/8 Tsp,
Onion – 1 medium, cut into small pieces,
Hing – 1/8 Tsp,
Mustard seeds – 1/4 Tsp,
Curry leaves – few,
Tamarind paste – 1/2 tablesp,
Peeled and crushed garlic – 5to 6 cloves,
Red chilli – 1 broken into pieces,
Jeera – A pinch,
Chopped coriander 1/2Tablesp ( optional ),
Dhania powder – 1Tablesp,or 1 tablespoon Of pappu masala (Ref.my recipe for pappu masala).
Method:
1).Wash dals and put in pressure cooker along with 400 ml.of water. Add haldi, Green chilli, tomato, chilli powder, dhania powder, half quantity of onion pieces and chopped palak.Pressure cook them for 3 whistles.
2).When the cooker cools down,remove the lid, mash the whole dal mix gently with a wooden laddle .Add tamarind paste and salt. Mix well and keep it on flame under sim.
3).Heat oil, add hing, mustard seeds, jeera, garlic, curry leaves,red chilli,remaining onion and fry till mustard crackles. Add this tadka to hot dal. Mix well and remove from flame.
4).Serve as side dish for hot plain rice with a tsp of desi ghee/ rotis etc. .
Tip:
While preparing tadka you can add chopped palak and cook for 2 minutes and then add to hot dal. Mix well and remove. This retains lovely green colour of greens.
