This is a healthy and tasty dal preparation with sweet potato leaves which are enriched with lot of medicinal benefits.( Thanks to Dr.Manthena garu for enlightening us with his very informative talk about sweet potato leaves ).
Ingredients:
Toor dal – 200 Gms,
Sweet potato leaves – about 20 to 25, picked ,washed and chopped fine,
Salt,
Onion – 1 small, sliced fine,
Green chilli – 3,each cut vertically into two,
Red chilli powder – 1/2 TSP,
Haldi – 1/8 Tsp,
Hing – 1/8 Tsp,
Oil – 2 Tablesp,
Tamarind pulp – 1Tsp,
Jeera – 1/4 Tsp,
Dhania powder – 1 Tablesp,
Methi seeds – 1/4 Tsp,( dry fried ).
Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp,
Vadagam – 1Tsp,(you can add peeled garlic cloves if it is not available ).
Red chilli – 1 cut into two,
Tomato – 1 medium,chopped into small pieces,
Curry leaves – few,
Chopped coriander leaves – 1 Tablesp.
Method :
1).Wash dal and put it in pressure cooker ( preferably 3 litres cooker ).Add haldi,red chilli powder,methi seeds, dhania powder,400 ml water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
2).Once the steam escapes, remove the lid and mash the dal with a wooden laddle or back of spoon.
3).Heat oil in a kadai add hing, mustard,red chilli, curry leaves and fry for few seconds. Add onion along with green chilli and fry till onion turns pink and soft. Add tomato and cook till it is little mushy.
L4).Add chopped greens and cook for 2 minutes with lid. Remove the lid, add mashed dal along with salt and tamarind.Stir well, cook for a minute and remove from flame. You can dilute the dal if it is thick by adding little hot water and keep it on flame for 1 more minute.
5).Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves and serve with hot plain rice along with a tsp of desi ghee or with rotis.
