This spicy, flavourful pudina dal is very tasty. It is very healthy too as pudina, the wonder herb is loaded with many medicinal benefits. Iam using pressure cooker to prepare this dal.
Ingredients:
Toor dal – 200 Gms,
Salt,
Pudina leaves – 1 cup ( measuring cup ), Washed, picked and chopped fine ),
Onion – 1 medium, sliced fine,
Green chilli – 10, each slit lengthwise,
Red chilli powder – 1/4 Tsp, ( optional ,cut no.of chilli ),
Haldi – 1/8 Tsp,
Jeera – 1/4 Tsp,
Tomato – 1, medium, chopped roughly,
Red chilli – 2,
Pappu masala / sambar powder – 1 Tsp, ( ref.my Pappu masala recipe ),
Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp,
Curry leaves – few,
Peeled and crushed garlic cloves – 6,
Oil – 2 Tablesp,
Hing – A pinch,
Tamarind paste – 1/2 Tsp,
Method:
1).Put toor dal, green chilli, Pappu masala, tomato, haldi, garlic, chilli powder ( if using ) in pressure cooker along with 500 ml water. Pressure cook the dal for 3 whistles.
2).Once the cooker is cool, remove the lid and mash the dal with a dal masher or ladle. Add tamarind paste, salt , mix and keep it aside.
3).Heat oil, add hing, mustard seeds, jeera, red chilli, curry leaves and fry till mustard crackles. Add pudina leaves and onion, fry till they turn soft. Pour this tadka over mashed dal and mix well. Keep it on low fire for a couple of minutes and remove.
4).Serve this delicious, flavourful dal with hot plain rice with a tsp of ghee/ chapathi/ poori etc.
If you desire you can add pudina leaves along with dal in cooker but I prefer to add pudina to tadka, just to retain that nice green colour of pudina to the prepared dal.
